About a year ago, I spent some time trying to put into words my true purpose for running Emma Lyn. Essentially, I was trying to answer the question “why do I do what I do?” I came up with the phrase Design. Create. Inspire. The design and create parts seemed very obvious to me. I design and create patterns and accessories on a daily basis. Although these are the most essential parts of my business, the word inspire is what's most important to me.
For the past 2 years of being in this entrepreneurial business, I have relied on inspiration from others to keep me motivated. One of my favorite things to do when I am creating is to listen to podcasts of stories of other successful people. I love hearing their stories of the highs and the lows. It’s always a very necessary reminder for me when I am feeling down and negative- I am not alone on this crazy entrepreneurial journey!
I've decided that I want to be able to share inspiration with others on the Emma Lyn blog. There are so many hardworking and inspirational people that I look up to everyday, and I am excited to share their stories with all of my readers. The Inspiration Collection will be a bi-weekly post featuring some amazing, hardworking women who are making a difference in all different ways. Know somebody who should be featured to tell their story? Send me an email!
I thought it would be appropriate to start off the collection by re-introducing myself on the blog!
Hi there! My name is Emma Kozlowski and I am the owner and designer of Emma Lyn Designs, a line of handmade accessories. I taught myself how to sew in college 5 years ago and have been designing and creating ever sense. When I am not at my full time job as a teacher, you will find me with a cup of coffee in my sewing room. I am also expecting my first little one in June! I design products that are both functional and fashionable. I believe as busy women, we all need practicality and simplicity, and I try to provide that in the form of fun, colorful accessories.
Who/what inspires you?
One thing that I absolutely LOVE to do to get inspired is listen to stories of over successful people. I love listening to podcasts and hearing the success and the failures of other entrepreneurs. It is so inspiring to hear that all of these successful people have had some really tough days throughout their journey. It is motivating to know that I am not alone on this crazy journey!
What’s in your purse?
I use my Emma Lyn essential clutch as my everyday purse. I have all of my cash, credit cards, chapstick (always!), sunglasses and business cards! I like to keep it simple. I throw this inside my school bag or inside a tote.
Go to drink:
Well normally it would be a nice glass of red wine, but since I’ve been pregnant, I have been loving spindrift grapefruit seltzer. I like to pour it in a glass and pretend I am drinking a nice cocktail!
Favorite Instagram accounts to follow and why:
This is a tough choice because I am so inspired by seeing what amazing things others are doing with their lives. I love following @Emilyley, creator of the Simplified Planner, and @Micamay creator of @Maydesigns. These ladies have been my inspiration and motivation from day one. One of my favorite fashion bloggers to follow is @kellyinthecity. She has such cute style and seems so sweet (and has the cutest little baby, Emma)!
Favorite way to unwind or relax:
Every night, my husband and I sit down to watch The Ellen Show. It is such a fun way to unwind. She is hilarious and I love hearing all of the uplifting stories she shares!
We all face different challenges in life and business. What is one obstacle or challenge you had overcome, big or little?
As an entrepreneur with no business background, I have faced a lot of challenges. Overall, I think one of the biggest challenges I have had to face is getting down on myself and feeling like I am not successful enough. It is challenging when I see so many other people doing better than me in the business world. When I start feeling this way, I walk away from social media, and try to think of all of the success that I have had over the past few years. Afterall, “Comparison is the thief of Joy.”
What is one tip you have on staying positive when things aren't perfect?
Step away. Sometimes I feel like I push myself too much, and when things aren’t working out, things really start to crumble all over. When I am frustrated, I become very negative and let that take over. My biggest advice for staying positive would be to know when it is time to step away and take a break. It is okay to walk away for a few minutes!
What do you think is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?
I think the most rewarding thing of running my own business is being incharge of my own success. I love how I am in control and I can take charge to get things done rather than relying on others. It is a good feeling knowing that my success is directly related to the things I have done.
